Well, we're going with something completely different today, I am actually going to post someone else's copyrighted material. Bear with me for just a moment here, while I explain. Prince Valiant may be the most common model, but I base all my fictional princes on the tale of Sir Robin, the Brave. Read on as I go into greater detail!

Like many of you out there, I was mostly raised by telivision. But unlike most of you, my telivision included a great deal of Muppets. Jim Henson, wherever you are today, I'll never forget you, kind sir! Well anyhow, if you ever saw the Muppet's version of the Frog Prince, you'll get minor references like 'bake the hall in the candle of her brain' which shows up periodically in my writing. And then, of course, there is the frog prince in question, Sir Robin, the Brave.

I searched The Internet from top to bottom, and despite this being a major piece of pop culture and a hugely ingrained portion of my childhood, I could not find the lyrics to Sir Robin, the Brave anywhere! What I did find was Monty Python's Sir Robin, but its not the same!

So I dusted off my copy of the Frog Prince, loaded it up, and paintakingly transposed the entire song. Presented to you in it's entirety, the tale of Sir Robin, the Brave:

They call me sir robin, the brave,
and history someday will rave
I'm valiant and daring, and noble of bearing
Courageous and gallant, a mountain of talent!
No wonder folks curtsey and wave
I'm Robin, Sir Robin, the brave

My tale is sad, but I will try,
To tell it all, before I cry
Twas long ago, and far away
A cold and cheerless winter day,

And in my search, for deeds to do
To show my bravery, through and through
I chanced upon a forest glen
And there I met... an ogre!

His teeth were long, I fear to tell
With muscles strong and dreadful smell
He looked at me, he wished me dead,
I looked at him, and then I said...

They call me sir robin, the brave,
And history one day will rave
I'm valiant and daring, and noble of bearing
Courageous and gallant, a mountain of talent!
No wonder folks curtsey and wave
I'm Robin, Sir Robin, the brave

With sword in hand, I circle round
He came toward me with mighty bound
But as he charged, I slipped away
He turned to strike, I did not stay

With fearful thrust, I forced him back,
And readied for the last attack
I raised my sword for one great lunge
And suddenly... it happened!

The wretched witch, a ghastly hag,
With eyes of pitch and dress of rag
She laughed at me, and bared a fang,
I smiled at her, and bravely sang...

They call me sir robin, the brave,
And history someday will rave

(In witch's voice)
You're valiant, and daring, and noble of bearing
But wait till I'm through, sir,
A prince? Oh, not you sir,
I'll make you a stone, or a log
Or maybe... Sir Robin, the Frog!

Well, since I've got a little more space here(Actually I've got all the space in the world, but I digress) I'll go ahead and make a half-hearted attempt at relating this to the chief subject of my blog: writing! Ballads like this are fun, and can add a little color to your work. I actually attempted to compose one myself, but well I suck at things like that. Anyway, if you're ever bored, look up The Frog Prince and give it a watch, its quite entertaining!

  1. Thanks for posting these lyrics! I too just searched the internet and found a bunch of Monty Python references. I was trying to sing the song for my muppet-loving fiance and my copy of the Frog Prince is on the other side of the country, so this post is much appreciated!!!
